Luxurious Isle of Lewis chess set combining the mythical Isle of Lewis chessmen with this lovely Tiger Ebony and Maple Chess Board, made in Spain. A large chess set made from the very wood veneers. The chessmen are a very precise reproduction of the original Isle of Lewis museum artefacts. These superb British made chess pieces are supplied by the National Museum of Scotland. They have been produced from laser scans of the original pieces that are on display in the UK museums.
It is said that the chessmen originated from Scandinavia but remained undiscovered for hundreds of years. It wasn't until 1831 that they were found by accident deep in a sand dune in, Lewis, Scotland. Some have argued that the figures were intended for a different use and there has been plenty of debate on the origins of the figures between Scotland and Scandinavia. These precise replicas give you a chance to own a piece of history.
