Alice in Wonderland Chess Set

The mathematician and author Lewis Carroll dreamed up the surreal story of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland". It was published in 1865 followed by the sequel, "Alice Through the Looking Glass and what Alice Found There" in 1871.

Lewis Carroll's real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. He was born the son of a country parson and educated first at Rugby School, then Christ Church Oxford. From early childhood he showed great aptitude for inventing games to amuse his eight younger brothers and sisters. Suffering from a severe stammer, he found it much easier to communicate naturally with children.

How the story began

Carroll was often visited by the children of the Dean of Christ Church, George Liddel. He would entertain them by making up stories and sketched the characters as he spoke. His favourite, Alice Liddel, remembers, "He seemed to have an endless store of these fantastical tales which he made up as he told them." He eventually wrote these stories down, illustrated them and presented them to young Alice.

Literary friends of Carroll urged him to publish. The children's writer, George McDonald read it to his children and his young son exclaimed, "I wished there were 60,000 volumes of it." By the time of Carroll's death in 1898 Alice's Adventures had become the most popular books in England, and by 1932 had become the most popular and famous books in the entire world. They have never been out of print.

The first book, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" has as its theme a pack of playing cards. The second book, "Alice Through the Looking Glass", has chess as a theme, very apt for inspiring a set of chess pieces. The story is played out on a chessboard where the "squares" become fields. The characters are chess pieces and some are animals. The sections between the fields are divided up streams, rivers and brooks. As Alice crosses the rivers and streams into new fields she enters into a different area of activity. Alice is in fact a white pawn who wins in eleven moves! This use of chess as a theme by Lewis Carroll is explored fully in Glen Downey's book, "The Truth About Pawn Promotion".

Most pieces are inspired by the famous drawings of John Tenniel, the original published illustrator of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Alice Through the Looking Glass" the pictures in the first draft copy were drawn by Lewis Carroll himself. Sir John Tenniel (1820-1914) was a cartoonist whose caricatures and cartoons appeared regularly in Punch magazine. His Alice illustrations became the most famous of all literary illustrations.
