This Lewis chess set with Celtic emblems adorning the box and Celtic knots representing the black squares of the chess board lid is one of the most popular Isle of Lewis Chess items we sell.
The Lewis chess pieces are presented in both ivory and brown coloured resin and although small, display accurate characteristics of the Lewis chess pieces we are all familiar with. When not in play, the pieces can be stored in the cut-foam interior of the case which is backed with black felt.
The Lewis chess pieces are very popular objects in the National Museum of Scotland. The Viking stash of ninety three figures carved from walrus tusk and probably made in Scandinavia in the 12th century, were found some 700 years later in a sand dune on Uig bay, Lewis. Eleven pieces are currently owned by National Museums Scotland and the remaining eighty two are in the British Museum in London.
